How did World War II impact the military and civilian populations of China?

Over 300,000 civilians were killed when the city of Nanking was captured. Over two million Japanese soldiers were stationed in China. When Japan attacked the United States in 1941, the Sino-Japanese conflict became part of World War II. By 1944, more supplies were reaching the Chinese, however, their position against the Japanese was still precarious in 1945. The Japanese were defeated when the Soviet Union declared war on Japan and the United States successfully dropped two atomic bombs on Japanese cities. The Japanese surrender ended the conflict in China. The loss of human life was tremendous, with 23% of the Allied military killed being Chinese. The overall death toll was over 20 million people by the war’s end.
