Answer:Thomas Jefferson purchased 828,000 square miles of land from France in 1803 for $15 million. France was willing to sell the land because they were at war with Spain. On its western border was Spanish Territory. The purchase doubled the size of the United States. It stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, and from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico. Jefferson’s goal was to gain control of the port city of New Orleans that was at the mouth of the Mississippi River. Part or all of fifteen states were created from the purchase and it is considered one of President Jefferson’s greatest achievements.
