The first step is to identify the author's claim or argument.

The next step is to identify the supporting evidence.

As you are identifying the evidence, consider what type of evidence it is. Is it ethos, pathos or logos? Keep in mind that logos, or logic and reasoning, are the strongest forms of evidence.

Once you have determined the type of evidence, consider if it has relevance and a valid connection to the claim or argument.

Determine if counter-claims or opposing points of view are included and refuted with reasoning and evidence.
