Articles of Confederation:

First Constitution of the United States, lasting from 1781 to 1787, that created a weak central government with only a legislative branch, and a Confederation Congress of one representative from each state.

Continental Congress:

Representative government of colonial leaders first called in 1774 and again in 1775 that governed the colonies during the Revolutionary War until the ratification of the Articles of Confederation in 1781.

Revolutionary War:

Conflict in which the United States fought and defeated Great Britain to earn its independence. The war started in 1775 and ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

Sovereignty:

The authority of a state to govern itself or another state.

Statehood:

Official status of states.
